The Aetheric Famine refers to the catastrophic era in which the magical vitality of the Eldravis continent began to rapidly deplete, leading to the physical fracturing of the landmass and a fundamental change in the laws of magic. What was once a golden age of arcane prosperity transitioned into a period of starvation, mutation, and isolation.

Origins: What Is Known

No living scholar can say with certainty what triggered the Famine. The onset, centuries ago, is remembered as a single catastrophic night when the ley lines convulsed and the center of the continent (now called Tyranis) became a permanent, silent wound in the world known as The Void. Common theories among scholars and common folk alike include:

• A forgotten war between archmages that ripped the weave apart.
• Divine punishment for the hubris of the old arcane empire.
• A natural, cyclical “tide” of magic that has simply receded, and will one day return.

None of these theories have been confirmed, and expeditions into Tyranis to find answers rarely return.

The Arcane Vacuum

The center of the continent acts as a perpetual Arcane Vacuum, an irresistible siphon constantly drawing all ambient magical energy toward the center of what is now known as Tyranis.

The Thinning of the Weave

As magic is pulled toward the Void, the density of the “weave” decreases as one moves further from the center. This has led to two primary lethal phenomena:

• The Life-Leech Effect: In areas where the magic is dangerously thin, casters can no longer rely on ambient energy. To manifest even basic spells, they must draw upon their own vital life force or the vitality of the surrounding environment, leading to rapid exhaustion and necrotic decay.
• The Arcane Gradient: The closer one approaches Tyranis, the more intense and volatile the magic becomes, while the outer reaches of Eldravis suffer from a profound “magical drought.”

Biological Impact: For unprotected humanoid lifeforms on Tyranis, the vacuum’s pull causes what is collectively termed Tyrants Hollowing, a catastrophic series of biological and physical breakdowns ranging from immediate mana-crystallization to total systemic collapse.

Geographical Consequence: The massive displacement of ambient magic also spawned Aetheric Turbulence, a permanent zone of violent magical interference encircling the fractured coastline that acts as both a symptom of the catastrophe and a natural barrier to the wider world.

The physical trauma of the Famine’s onset was so great that the continent could not remain whole. The tectonic and magical stresses literally tore the peripheral lands away from the central mass:
