The Aetheric Turbulence
Overview
The Aetheric Turbulence is a permanent zone of hyper-violent magical interference that encircles the fractured coastline of Eldravis, extending more than three hundred miles outward into the open sea from the center of Tyranis. It acts as both a physical barrier and a symptom of the continent’s central wound—the Arcane Vacuum known as The Void. While often described simply as “stormy,” it is a landscape where the laws of physics bend under the weight of displaced ambient mana.
The Nature of the Pull
The Turbulence is not weather; it is gravity made manifest by magic. As the Void rips ambient energy from the world, the surrounding atmosphere attempts to refill the void instantly. This creates a “tug-of-war” between the sea and the center:
- Aetheric Shear: A physical pressure that scales with proximity. At three hundred miles out, it is merely a dull heaviness in the joints, like the onset of a migraine. As one approaches the Turbulence’s core, this shear becomes intense, pressing against the eardrums and making movement feel like wading through thick mud.
- Compass Warping: Standard navigational tools fail as they are magnetically inverted toward Tyranis. Compasses spin wildly, and brass astrolabes twist in their housings, forcing mariners to rely entirely on dead reckoning until the coastlines of the fractured continent finally appear on the horizon.
- The Distant Hush: The farther reaches of the Turbulence dampen sound waves, creating a muffled atmosphere where voices sound thin and distant. Closer to the center, this drops into a terrifying, absolute silence as sound itself is pulled toward the epicenter.
Physiological Effects on Travelers
For those navigating the three-hundred-mile perimeter of the Turbulence or crossing toward Tyranis without protection:
- The Pallor (Blood-Leech): Because blood contains inherent magical resonance—even in non-magical humanoids—it becomes a target for the Void’s gravity. Prolonged exposure causes blood to thin and pool away from the brain and extremities, pulling toward the island. Survivors on ships caught in the Turbulence develop a ghostly grey pallor and suffer from chronic vertigo.
- The Faint & The Phantoms: As the head loses oxygen-rich flow while the Void pulls at it, travelers frequently faint without warning. Upon waking, they often experience hallucinations—seeing shapes of people or monsters in the mist—that are actually just the brain misinterpreting the arcane static being poured into their optic nerves.
Historical Context
Before the Great Sealing centered at the Void, the Turbulence did not exist. It began as a violent storm during the night of the catastrophe and never calmed. The “Elder Navigators” who mapped Eldravis centuries ago described it simply as the ‘Grey Wound’, noting that their compasses spun wildly and their ship’s hull groaned as if pressed by an underwater giant.
